in which i let my harry potter nerd show.

well hi hello there. have i got a treat for you harry potter lovers today. can you EVEN with all the non-baby related content these days??i was talking to my friend ashten (you know ashten, she's the best) while she was writing blog posts, and we got to talking about what kinds of posts are our favorites. we like your standard coffee date posts, fun fact posts, and day in the life posts (i will be doing one of those soon). and then we decided that we both wanted to write harry potter posts, specifically our top five favorite characters, because there is something about harry potter preferences that gives you an insight into the true essence of who someone is. it's like a personality test, but better! and then nicole got in on the fun and that was that.we only had a few rules:

  1. your list cannot include Harry, Hermione, Ron or Dumbledore. because then that would just be four out of five taken care of!
  2. can only be 5 characters. we figured we all probably have a top 10 list, but that might be overkill.
  3. your list doesn’t have to be in order. mine is not. except my number one.

i would LOVE to hear what your top five characters are in the comments, i live for this stuff. and once you've read this one, go visit ashten and nicole to see their top five. i can't wait to see which ones we have in common.

and now, without further ado, here are my top five harry potter characters

1. neville longbottomthis is something you probably didn't need to know about me, but neville is my favorite harry potter character other than hermione and dumbledore. I JUST LOVE HIM. and no this has nothing to do with the glow-up of the actor who played him in the movies, i love the character itself. neville is always the underdog who just wants to be normal, one of the group, but can never really get there completely. all the way until almost the end of the series, he is trying to find his place, where he belongs, what he can offer, like most of us are trying to do in our own lives. but where most people in his situation would just blindly follow the popular thing to do, neville longbottom never compromises his values to fit in. he always does what he thinks is right, even when it means losing some of his status. the biggest example of this is when he stands up to harry, ron, and hermione when they leave gryffindor tower after hours, but he shows this side of himself all the way through the books. i wish more people were like neville, especially during their terrifying teenage years, because maybe then i wouldn't hate teenagers so much.harry potter GIF2. professor minerva mcgonagallokay, this is probably a very popular opinion, because mcgonagall is a badass lady who takes no prisoners, and WE LOVE IT and WE ARE HERE FOR IT. i have always loved her ability to be a super straight-laced teacher but still with an amazing sense of humor and wit. i also loved what a wonderful caretaker she was, especially to harry, without being cheesy or overly sweet. i know this part wasn't in the books, but when i saw the last movie in theaters, and she says that line, "i've always wanted to use that spell!" with a little giggle, i literally got tears in my eyes because it was just so mcgonagall. i imagine i would like to have a few cocktails with her because even though we never get to hear much of her backstory in the books, i like to think she could tell you a few stories in a pub about her heyday.club bar GIF3. luna lovegoodi think that you either love luna or you hate luna. i don't think i've ever met anyone who is lukewarm on her character. which i totally get, because she's a weirdo. but i love a good, kind-hearted weirdo, as i myself am one. i actually started out as a luna hater, because i really didn't get why she needed to be part of the story. but then as her character developed, i started to understand that she was there to let harry feel as weird as he needed to feel without feeling weird about it. does that make sense? a lot of luna's weirdness goes back to her losing her mother, and that allows her to understand how other people's grief takes its own shape. i love how empathetic and how genuine she is, partly because i always strive to be empathetic and genuine (but fail a lot). i'd love to hear if there are other luna lovers out there.4. molly weasleyi would never have said that molly weasley was a favorite character until i became a mom. i mean, maybe if we were talking top ten, but that might even be cutting it close. but now! man oh man, if molly isn't #momgoals and #hostessgoals. i find myself fantasizing some days about being able to use magic to cook dinner and clean the house like she does, especially on days when i have to do those things but crying and/or crazy kids are really making it difficult. i love her because she always makes everyone feel at home, no matter how busy or crazy she feels, and if considers you family, she would do anything for you. like i said with mcgonagall, i would really like to have a cocktail or two with molly as well, because you know she has stories too. also, can we all agree, she is one of the unsung heroes of these books? i feel like so many more people would have died if molly hadn't been keeping everyone's crap together.5. dobbyi would guess that this is another popular opinion, because who doesn't love dobby? dobby makes my whole body clench with secondhand frustration sometimes, like when he's screwing things up for harry that should have just been easy, but he does everything with such a pure heart that you have to love him anyway. all he wants to do is help his friend harry and be free, he can't help if he doesn't know the best way to do that. he was a house elf his whole life you guys! also, if you didn't have full body convulsions and get a headache from crying so hard when you read that *spoiler alert* dobby dies, then you need to go get yourself some therapy, because that is probably one of the saddest scenes in the history of literature.you guys, i know that blogging these days is all about the branding and the curated photos and the coherent color schemes, so this post is probably as throwback blogging as you can get. but if this is the wrong way to blog these days, then i don't want to be right. because this was so much fun for me to write. i hope you guys liked it too. i can't wait to hear your faves so i can peek inside your brains via harry potter!
