fall time.
i don't know if this is a function of being married, or because i'm just naturally averse to leaving my apartment. ever. but the fall time makes me want to stay inside and nest constantly. i'll give you some examples of what i do when this phenomenon occurs. basically, these are the things i get excited about and choose to spend my time on in the fall that are things i would NEVER care about in the rare, warmer months.1) i am OBSESSED with this candle. literally obsessed.i was returning some shirts to GAP the other day (sidebar: aren't they so hit or miss nowadays? i'm pretty sure it has everything to do with the fact that they use vanity sizing. i mean, come on, an XS should not be big on anyone with my cup size. that's just silly.) and i happened to walk right past bath and body works. and i happened to see a sign for a certain 2 for $20 sale on their big candles. if you know me, you know that i like receiving candles as gifts, and i like giving candles as gifts, but really don't see a reason to splurge on those types of things as an everyday sort of thing. until now. because it's fall. and i've found out what heaven smells like. and it's this candle. warm cider, caramel apple, and leaves. and now i can't ever leave my apartment because i have to burn this all the time until it's gone!2) pumpkin. punkin. whatever you want to call it, i need it in my life this time of year. i forget about it the rest of the time, but it's wrong to not use it at least once during this gorgeous season. it's so color-coordinated too!in cookies, great. in scones, great. i'm about to try it in some coffee creamer. i think it has vitamins in it, so it's good for you right? even when the only way you eat it is mixed with cups and cups and cups of sugar? good for you.
(i baked all of these at 8am on saturday morning. no, i'm only 25, why do you ask?)
these tasted like cake. the recipe is here. this ain't no food blog, but i am happy to share where i get my recipes.
these pumpkin scones were delicious. quick tip: make sure you have enough flour when you make scones, as it is basically the most important ingredient. these turned out fine, but it was a close call. also, this midwestern girl's website is lovely and extremely successful, and her recipes are awesome.
3) i don't know if you all knew, but in minnesota it got cold all of a sudden this weekend. which is great, because we can all put on our sweaters and jackets and scarves and boots and be perfectly happy forever and ever. it also means we can sit at bonfires with no bugs flying into our eyes and our beers. and thanks to some lovely friends of ours (thanks dee and aaron!), on saturday night, Mister Man and i headed out to a good old city backyard bonfire. there is nothing like bundling up in borrowed jackets, holding onto a cold beer and sitting by a blazing fire with a great group of people. having a healthy debate about the merits of poking the wood vs. just letting it sit usually makes it even more fun, right mr. z?
i have a feeling that i'm going to be in this serious fall nesting mode until winter. and then it will transition into winter nesting mode. the world may not see a lot of me until the spring comes. what is everyone else's fall 'thing'? does everyone nest, or is this is an oddity particular to me? either way, cheers to the colder weather, which i will be happy about for about two seconds before i miss summer again. so fickle.
